Make a difference

When you are at the shops, at school, at church or in the park, pick out a few young people and learn their names. Walk up to them with a smile, greet them by name, and ask how they are doing.

At first, they'll behave awkwardly - after all, they don't really know you. But keep doing it, again and again, from one week to the next. Soon they will warm to you because they enjoy friendly people.

Yes kids need knowledge and information. But more than that they need significant adults in their lives in order to feel valued and appreciated. They need to have people to whom they can turn. It is only if you get to know them that they will be able to turn to you.

Get to know the names of the young people who live next door to you. Get to know the names of the young people in your street. Engage them in conversation and listen to them. Take a real interest in their lives. Then you will contribute, in a meaningful way, to their self-esteem and build resiliency in those young people with whom you interact. You will be completing the Circle of Courage! You can make a difference!
